Club de Deportes Concepción, is a Chilean football club based in the city of Concepción.

The club were founded on February 29, 1966 by the fusion of several amateur clubs such as Galvarino, Liverpool, Juvenil Unido, Santa Fe and Club Lord Cochrane. The club are one of the most important teams in the VIII region of Chile, their great rivals are Fernandez Vial and Huachipato. The club plays their home games at Estadio Municipal de Concepción in Concepción, Chile, which seats about 35,000 people.

History

The team joined the of the Chilean professional league in 1966 and won the tournament a year later gaining promotion to the .

In 1991 the team joined Colo Colo in representing Chile in the Copa Libertadores, they passed through the 1st round phase but lost in the round of sixteen against America de Cali.

In 1993 the club were relegated after finishing 15th of 16 teams, but the club bounced streight back by winning the second division title in 1994.

Concepcion played their next big international tournament in 1999, they participated in the Copa Conmebol and made it all the way to the semifinals but lost against Talleres de Cordoba from Argentina. A real disappointment to the fans.

In the year 2001, they once again played the Copa Libertadores and beat rivals such as San Lorenzo from Argentina and Jorge Wilstermann from Bolivia. Once again they made it into the round of sixteen but lost this time to Vasco da Gama from Brazil who had top class players like Romário in their team.

In 2002 the club were again relegated by finishing 15th of 16 teams in the aggregated table, they returned to the top flight in 2004.

In the year 2006 the team was suspended and could not play professionally in the whole year due to debts and unpaid salaries. The club was going to be relegated, but after a legal battle, they were readmitted in the Chilean first division, where they play in 2007. An alternative team (Deportes Concepción B) plays in the Third division of Chile as well.

The Beginnings

Were founded the 29 of February of 1966, as resulting from the fusion of several clubs of soccer of the city of Conception (Galvarino, Liverpool, Juvenil Unido and Santa Fe), that, resigning to a brilliant and sport historical length, they megred to make reality the ambitious project have a representative team of the river basin of the Biobío in the Chilean concert. The decade of 'the 70

In the first round, they tie as local before Nacional de Montevideo (0-0) and manage to defeat to San Lorenzo de Almagro of Argentina (then directed by Manuel Pellegrini) and Jorge Wilstermann of Bolivia, acceding to second phase in this last party, thanks to the tie 1-1 between Uruguayan Argentines and, that gambled of simultaneous way.

In second round, Concepcion was eliminated by Vasco Da Gama of Brazil, falling 1-3 in Collao and 0-1 in Rio de Janeiro before the equipment commanded by Romário. Was the best participation of a Chilean equipment in this edition of Libertadores Cup.

The new century

Unexpectedly, and after a thin campaign in 2002, Deportes Concepcion returns to descend to the Second Chilean Division (now called Primera B), [23] with hardly 28 points in 30 parties and occupying 15° place between 16 equipment.

Season 2003 in the Primera B was forgetfulnessable, obtaining 5° place that did not reach after the Liguilla de Promoción. In 2004, Deportes Concepcion looked for the ascent in a championship with an endless number of phases and stages. The first round, zonal, gained it with 27 points, whereas in the second stage finished 2° after Naval, totalizing 47 units. Nevertheless, by financial problems, the ANFP decides to impose a punishment of a year to Deportes Conception during 2006, season in which the equipment does not participate in the championships of this federation, although its branch is accepted in the Third Chilean division. During this year the leadership tries, of diverse forms, to reunite to the necessary bottoms for the payment of these obligations and the return of the equipment to professional soccer, settling down the sport joint-stock company as new form of operation of the club as of November of 2006. After prolonged litigations with the National Association of Chilean Professional Soccer, his Patrimonial Court decided the return of the equipment to the First Chilean division during the 2007 championship.

Suspension and automatic reduction

With 12 points less in the championship, without trainer and with a flight of players, Deportes Conception received one of the hardest punishments: The club will not be able to participate in the Match of Closing and will descend directly to Primera B. The descisión was taken by the ANFP after considering that the club could not credit financing for the 2008 budget. In addition, the failure specifies that if the club began to play before the definitive resolution, the points obtained in these parties would be annulled. Although the failure is not definitive, the possibilities of success in the appeal are low, and is almost safe that the club will play in the Primera B during season 2009. After appeal, and with the match already initiated, the failure was ratified and Deportes Conception will play in Primera B.
