Degrees & Program Areas

The Warner School offers certificate (CAS), master’s (MS, MAT) and doctoral (EdD, PhD) programs in many areas.

Educational Leadership

The Warner School's Educational Leadership programs in Administration and Higher Education share a singular goal: to instill in students a passion to take the initiative and the skills to inspire and carry out change in America's schools, colleges, and universities. The leadership programs prepare students to be skilled, knowledgeable, thoughtful and creative leaders and researchers in K-12 schools and school districts and higher education, with a comprehensive understanding of the institutional and cultural world of education.

Teaching & Curriculum

Warner's Teaching & Curriculum programs are designed to provide the tools practitioners and researchers need to be knowledgeable, reflective, and caring educators. Underlying the Teaching & Curriculum program’s approach is its commitment to social justice and to understanding and eliminating social inequity. Warner educators are empowered to become leaders in the struggle to make schools just and nurturing environments.

The Warner School offers teacher preparation leading to New York State certification in early childhood education; elementary education; middle school and secondary education in mathematics, science (earth science, biology, chemistry, physics), English, social studies, foreign language (French, Spanish, German and Latin). The School also prepares teachers for certification in literacy, inclusive education, and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

Counseling & Human Development

The Warner School's programs in Counseling & Human Development prepare graduates who understand human development and change across the life course in various contexts. They pursue leadership roles in the helping professions as school counselors, community agency counselors, teachers or researchers in colleges and universities, and human development professionals in a range of human service agencies, universities, government, and research organizations.

Programs in counseling include: School Counseling, School & Community Counseling, Community Mental Health Counseling, Gerontological Counseling, and Student Affairs Counseling.

Programs in human development include: General Studies, Early Childhood, Developmental Differences, Family Studies, Gerontology, and Research.

The Warner School's Mission Statement

At the Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, we believe that education can transform lives and make the world more just and humane. This vision informs our teaching, research and service as a research school of education, as we strive to:

PREPARE practitioners and researchers who are knowledgeable, reflective, skilled and caring educators, who can make a difference in individual lives as well as their fields, and who are leaders and agents of change;

GENERATE and disseminate knowledge leading to new understandings of education and human development, on which more effective educational policies and practices can be grounded;

COLLABORATE – across disciplines, professions and constituencies – to promote change that can significantly improve education and support positive human development.

Our diverse work in each of these domains is informed by the following underlying beliefs: the improvement of education is in pursuit of social justice; development and learning shape and are shaped by the contexts in which they occur; the complexity of educational problems requires an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach; and best practices are grounded in research and theory, just as useful theory and research are informed by practice.
