The Wych Elm "Ulmus glabra" cultivar 'Atropurpurea' was raised from seed at the Späth nursery in Berlin, Germany, circa 1881 as "Ulmus montana (: glabra) atropurpurea" Elwes, H. J. & Henry, A. (1913). "The Trees of Great Britain & Ireland". Vol. VII. pp 1848-1929. Private publication, Edinburgh. Description

'Atropurpurea' has folded, dark-purple leaves, and is probably synonymous with 'Purpurea'.

Pests and diseases

A specimen at the Ryston Hall [http://www.rystonhall.co.uk/] , Norfolk, arboretum, obtained from the Späth nursery before 1914 Ryston Hall Arboretum catalogue, circa 1920] , was killed by the earlier strain of Dutch elm disease prevalent in the 1930s.

Cultivation

Several trees still survive in the UK and Australia.The tree is not known to have been introduced to North America, nor is it known to be available from nurseries.
