John Swan

John Swan

Sir John William David Swan (born 1935) was a British-Bermudian territorial political figure (United Bermuda Party).

Sir John entered Bermuda's parliament in 1972. As Minister for Home Affairs from 1978 to 1982, he played a key role in introducing social reforms to the island and garnering widespread popular support for a series of housing and education initiatives.

He served as the Premier of Bermuda from 15 January 1982 to 25 August 1995 and played a key role in developing Bermuda as an international business jurisdiction. Sir John was also pivotal in recruiting several prominent black members of the community to join the UBP and create a more balanced, multi-racial ruling party. The UBP during Sir John's tenure set a new tone of racial unity and sharing of power that they now continue to follow. Swan's policies towards independence and the economic state of the relatively poor (Bermuda boasted one of the top 5 per capita GNPs in the world) through most of his tenure were controversial.

Swan is still a respected business man in Bermuda. John has had a very successful career in the real estate business of Bermuda. Sir John grew up in a very poor area of Bermuda called Deep Dale and created his own real estate business. It is estimated that he built 35% of all housing in Bermuda. Fact|date=December 2007
