Lakewood High School (California)

Lakewood High School is a public secondary school located in the Southern California city of Lakewood. Founded in 1957, it is part of the Long Beach Unified School District. LHS served twelve sophomores, juniors, and seniors in 2007. Lakewood is the architectural twin of nearby Millikan, which opened in 1956. The school mascot is the Lancer and their colors are red and white. The school's secondary mascot is the Dragon and its secondary color is black. Lakewood High School's motto is "Today's lancers, Tomorrow's leaders."

Baseball

Lakewood's baseball team is one of the most consistent programs in California, with 27 Moore League titles as of 2006 [http://www.lbusd.k12.ca.us/lakewood/Lancers/departments/athletics/Baseball/baseball.htm] . The 2006 season saw the team win the CIF Southern Section Division I Championship, the fifth in the history of the program, against Agoura High School, winning 2-1 at Angel Stadium. The team is lead by coach Spud O'Neil. Last season they won the moore league. They have produced several players who have gone on to play in the major leagues.

Merit Scholars

The Merit Scholars Program is available to entering freshmen with a minimum grade point average of 3.3, ready to enter Algebra 1-2, average attendance and citizenship, and a desire for achievement. The program provides an opportunity for students to take Lakewood's rigorous Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Students with at least a 3.3 unweighted GPA at graduation receive a Lakewood High School Merit Scholar diploma, a medallion, and wear distinguished Merit Scholar honor apparel.

Odyssey Academy

Odyssey Academy is a unique and innovative college-bound program. The purpose of the Odyssey Academy is to prepare students to be successful in college by providing an enriched English, math, science, and social studies curriculum.Odyssey Academy teachers are committed to helping students succeed. They plan lessons together, helping students to make connections from one class to another.A major focus of Odyssey Academy is on marine studies. This ocean theme is seen both inside the classroom and real world Odyssey field trips to research labs and aquariums.

pecial Programs

Lakewood offers many special opportunities for its students that are not available from many other area high schools, including an annual musical for which all students may audition, and an annually published literary magazine, The Accolade. A tradition of a live reading of the magazine by its writers was begun in 2005.
