Guildford Kings

Guildford Kings

The Guildford Kings were a successful British Basketball League franchise during the early 1990s. They ceased operations at the end of the 1993-94 season, but before that the Kings were one of the leading clubs in British basketball.

The franchise started with the Kingston team of the 1980s National Basketball League. After finishing 2nd in the inaugural 1987-88 British Basketball League season, the team was bought out by Rangers chairman David Murray, and became the Glasgow Rangers. The Rangers were League Champions in 1988-89, but soon moved back to Kingston upon Thames where the franchise enjoyed their most glorious years.

From 1989 to 1992, Kingston won every League Championship, and in 1992 the franchise was uprooted yet again and moved to the brand new Spectrum Arena in Guildford to become the Guildford Kings. The Kings competed for two more years in the British Basketball League and even European competitions, until 1994, when the franchise folded completely.

Professional basketball returned to Guildford in 2005 with the creation of Guildford Heat, who also play out of the Guildford Spectrum.
