Sigerson Clifford

Sigerson Clifford

Sigerson Clifford (1913 – 1985) was an Irish poet and playwright.

He was born in County Cork, although his parents were from County Kerry, and they returned there in the following year, to Cahirciveen. It was there that he grew up and went to school. After finishing secondary school, he went to Dublin and joined the civil service.

He wrote a number of poems and plays, including "The Great Pacificator", which was staged at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in 1947. Clifford will be remembered for his poem "The Boys Of Barr Na Sraide" which is named after a street in Cahirciveen and speakes of the Irish tradition of "hunting" for the wren (a small bird) on St. Stephen's Day, December 26.
