Ahar is a town and the capital of Ahar County in East Azarbaijan provience, Iran. The town is known on the market place for its Ahar rugs. It should be noted that the Ahar rug is also commonly referred to as a Heriz or Heris Rug.

Ahar is one of the ancient cities of azarbayjan, its name before islam was "meimad" ,Fact|date=August 2007 after presentation of islam this city has been named "ahar" or "ahrich" that was chief town of "garadagh". Ahar in Arabic is read as /Ahaer/ that means "van". Van is a tree that was abundant in Ahar region.

In the 12th-13th centuries, Ahar was a minor and short-lived, but prosperous emirate ruled by the Pishteginid dynasty of Georgian origin (1155—1231). [Minorsky, Vladimir (1951), "The Georgian Maliks of Ahar." "BSOAS" vol. 13/4, pp. 868-77.]
