Aang Serian Drum is East Africa's first indigenous media center. Based in Arusha, Tanzania, the Center aims to make electronic media accessible to indigenous Tanzanian youth.

History

The center is the media extension of Aang Serian, an organization of Tanzanian indigenous youth. It began in July 2002 through Masaai Media Project, which taught two Maasai youth to shoot and edit their own documentary style videos on portable video and computer equipment. The students used imovie and mini digital video to conduct the project. The video they produced was sold through fair trade practices to raise seed funds for Aang Serian Drum.

Current Projects

Aang Serian Drum is currently a fully functional media center, working in conjunction with its sister organization Aang Serian to educate indigenous youth in media making. The center now owns three computers and two digital video cameras. It is expanding through grants, donations, and sales of new videos.

Aang Serian Drum has recently been awarded funds by the United Nations to produce a series of documentaries on Tanzanian Indigenous cultures.

The center's most notable member is Anwary Massawe. One of Tanzania's prominent emerging film makers, he has been awarded National Geographic's All Roads Film Project grant to produce adocumentary on the rock paintings of the Kondoa Irangi of central Tanzania.
