The Electoral district of Melbourne is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is currently based around the suburbs of Carlton, North Carlton, East Melbourne, West Melbourne, North Melbourne, Parkville, Newmarket, Kensington and Flemington, and also includes the Melbourne city centre and Melbourne University. The district has been in existence since 1856 (it was abolished in 1859 and reestablished in 1889).
The district has been traditional Labor territory since 1908, but it became a marginal seat at the 2002 state election when Dr Richard DiNatale of the Greens came to within 2% of unseating the current member, Labor cabinet minister Bronwyn Pike. Both were candidates again at the 2006 state election and Pike again withstood DiNatale's challenge.
