Mountain View High School is a public high school in Stafford, Virginia, United States, for students in grades nine through twelve in the western area of Stafford County.

History

Mountain View High School was completed in 2005 as the fifth secondary school in Stafford County. "MVHS" is the second in a series of educational facilities architecturally identical to Colonial Forge High School. The school's colors are maroon and orange and the mascot is the Wildcat.
The school's principal, Dr. James Stemple, was named Principal of the Year for the district during the 2006-2007 school year.

Location and demographics

Mountain View is located on Mountain View Road, several miles from I-95 and U.S. 1. Any demographic information pertaining to Mountain Views' student population has yet to be formally documented or released by the Stafford County Public School System or any other reputable agency. However, according to Standard & Poor's SchoolMatters.com, the ethnicity breakdown is as follows: 73.4% White, 15% Black, 7% Hispanic, 2.6% Asian/Pacific Islander.

Number of Graduating Students

The class of 2007 was the first graduating class of Mountain View High School, and consisted of over 300 graduating students. In 2010, approximately 500 students graduated.

International Baccalaureate Program

In 2006, MVHS became the first IB school in Stafford County's school district. Motivated students at MVHS can enroll in either single IB courses to earn the IB Certificate or the full IB diploma program. Students in the full diploma program take advanced courses in six core areas and a Theory of Knowledge course. Students in the diploma program must complete the Extended Essay which is a 4,000 word research paper on the topic of their choice. In addition to academic rigor, IB Diploma students are expected to complete a community service course requiring at least 150 hours of community service.

In 2008, nine students out of the graduating class of over 400 chose to pursue the prestigious IB Diploma. Over 30 graduated with the IB certificate.

Athletics

The Mountain View High School Athletics Department is led by their Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Chris Courtney.

Their Varsity Wrestling team was Voted 10th of all AAA teams in the Metropolitan Area (includes Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia, they also went on to place second in both the Commonwealth District and Northwest Regional Championships, both times behind state champion, Colonial Forge High School.

Boys Cross Country and Track and Field at Mountain View, despite the school's infancy, have proven to be extremely competitive. During their first year in existence, the track team claimed the Commonwealth District Title for Spring Track. They continued to win the Commonwealth District and Northwest Region in Cross Country and won the Indoor District Championship and Indoor Regional Championship. Recently, they have completed a triple crown of district and regional titles by winning both in outdoor track.

Jacob Hodges holds the school records for most touchdown passes in a game (5 touchdowns), most completions in a game (24 completions), and most passing yards in a game (321). A. J. Fernow holds the school records for most receiving yards in one game (251) and most receptions in a game (20). AJ Fernow also holds the Virginia State High School football record for most receptions in one game (20) which was set in November 2007.

Band

The Mountain View Marching Band received a superior rating in 2007 at VBODA for their show of music from the motion picture First Knight.

In their 08-09 season the band received a Superior rating at the VBODA Marching Festival for their show "Call of the Mountain". It contained of the following songs: Call of the Mountain, Comin Around the Mountain, Avalanche (percussion feature), and Hall of the Mountain King. With a Superior rating from the Wind Ensemble at VBODA Festival, the MVHS Band became a Virginia Honor Band.

In their 2009-10 season the band received a Superior rating at the VBODA Marching Festival for their show titled, "Echoes of Freedom". It contained of the following pieces: Fanfare and Variations of Yankee Doodle, Call to Arms(percussion feature), Chester De Ritmo, and Hymn to Freedom. With another Superior rating from the Mountain View Wind Ensemble at the VBODA District Festival, the band became a Virginia Honor band for the fourth year in a row.

In the band's 10-11 season, the band received a Superior rating at the VBODA Marching Festival for their show titles, "The Music of Beethoven". It contained the following pieces: Beethoven's Fifth, Fur Elise, Scherzo, Pathetique, and Ode to Joy. With another Superior rating performance by the Mountain View Wind Ensemble from the VBODA District Performance Assessment, the Mountain View Band program is an Honor Band for the fifth consecutive time.

Literature and art magazine

MVHS has an award-winning student-run literature and art magazine called Scene. In its first year of publication (2005–2006), Scene earned both a Gold Medal and a Gold Crown from Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). In addition to these prestigious distinctions, the first issue of Scene also won top awards from NSPA and ASPA, and was awarded Trophy Class by the Virginia High School League (VHSL). In its second year of publication, Scene earned top awards from CSPA, NSPA, SIPA, and VHSL. The magazine was deemed "Best in Show" at the VHSL's annual publications workshop on October 27, 2007.

Scene accepts submissions of art and writing from the student body. A volunteer after-school student staff then selects and edits those submissions for publication and designs the magazine. The magazine is printed by Stafford Printing.
