Pai (Devnagri:पै)(IPA|pθj) is a common surname amongst the Gowd Saraswat Brahmins of India. Pai is known to be a prakrit of "Pati" or "Lord". Another possible, but less likely. root for the surname is "foot" or "leg" in Konkani "Paay/Pai". The common person who had not amassed wealth or power was known as "Pai". Their job was menial in maintaining ledgers and doing odd jobs; Pai were mainly ledger keepers.Pai may have come from Appaya meaning elderbrother according to Poet B.B.
