Elliot McGucken

Dr Elliot McGucken is a physicist, author and inventor [ [http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=%2220070156594%22.PGNR.&OS=DN/20070156594&RS=DN/20070156594/ U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 20070156594] ] .

Scientific career

McGucken received a B.A. in physics from Princeton and a Ph.D. in physics from UNC Chapel Hill where his dissertation on an artificial retina chip [ [http://jollyroger.com/merrill/ artificial retina chip] ] for the blind received a Merrill Lynch Innovations Award. The dissertation was titled "Multiple unit artificial retina chipset to aid the visually impaired and enhanced holed-emitter CMOS phototransistors," and the appendix contained an early treatment of McGucken's Moving Dimensions Theory. McGucken received several "Fight for Sight" grants for his retina-chip research, and it appeared in publications including "Sensors Magazine", "Popular Science", "Business Week", and NSF's "Frontiers" . A later form of McGucken's dissertation became a book chapter in Intelligent Systems and Technologies in Rehabilitation Engineering (Crc Press International Series on Computational Intelligence). The project continues to this day.

He founded the Physics, Astronomy, Math, and Philosophy Forums, [ [http://physicsmathforums.com Physics, Astronomy, Math, and Philosophy Forums] ] which became home for discussions of physical theories of reality alternative to the controversial, yet dominant String Theory. McGucken's Moving Dimensions Theory [ [http://physicsmathforums.com/showthread.php?t=2389 Moving Dimensions Theory] ] posits that the fourth dimension is expanding relative to the three spatial dimensions, and with this simple postulate reflecting an underlying physical reality, the model attempts to unify and account for the physical phenomena found in quantum mechanics, relativity, and statistical mechanics.

McGucken won a Tanner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching while at UNC. He demonstrated a proclivity towards science in high school, where he won the Bausch & Lomb Science Award, The William Tenney Scholar-Athlete Award, and the Judith A. Resnick Scholarship. While at Princeton, he was president of the Society of Physics Students (SPS).

Literary work

McGucken is the author of several books, including two novels--"Autumn Rangers" and "The Tragedy of Drake Raft"--and a poetry collection, "Eternity in a Grain of Sand". His poem, "In the Name of Freedom," was published in "The Wall Street Journal Online". McGucken founded the Great Books portal "The Jolly Roger" in 1995. [ [http://jollyrogercom Great Books portal "The Jolly Roger"] ] "The New York Times" deemed jollyroger.com "simply unprecedented," adding that the site "teems with discussion, the kind that goes well beyond freshman lit 101."

Artistic entrepreneurship

McGucken founded and taught the Arts Entrepreneurship class at UNC Chapel Hill, [ [http://artsentrepreneurship.com Arts Entrepreneurship] ] and he is currently working on a book for the curriculum. His work in Open Source and DRM is inspired by a call to empower the indie artist. He presented Authena Open Source DRM/CMS [ [http://authena.org Authena Open Source DRM/CMS] ,] at the Harvard Law School OSCOM, and 22 surf was accepted to the Zurich OSCOM. He recently spoke at Austin's SXSW, delivering a lecture entitled, "Web 2.0 / 3.0 ArtsEntrepreneurship.com: Make Your Passion Your Profession [ [http://2007.sxsw.com/interactive/programming/panels/?action=show&id=IAP060259 Web 2.0 / 3.0 ArtsEntrepreneurship.com: Make Your Passion Your Profession] "] . "The Chapel Hill Herald" reported, "The (AE&T) class is the first of its kind to incorporate art, technology and business."

Hero's Journey Entrepreneurship Festival

McGucken founded the Hero's Journey Entrepreneurship Festival [ [http://herosjourneyentrepreneurship.org Hero's Journey Entrepreneurship Festival] ] in Malibu, CA. Keynote speakers have included John C. Bogle, the founder and former CEO of Vanguard, and William Fay, executive producer at Legendary Pictures. The festival pays homage to Joseph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces and the Hero's Journey in all walks of life.

Music Video

McGucken shot the music video for Vaughan Penn's Ready to Rise [ [http://youtube.com/watch?v=DT_ExxvLcTE Ready to Rise] ] , which has been heard on Laguna Beach and Gray's Anatomy.
