Lyubery

Lyubery

During the period of Glasnost in the late 1980s in the Soviet Union, the Lyubery were a youth-cult whose aim was to "cleanse" Soviet society of Western influences by attacking Westernized youth, mainly in major cities such as Moscow. They singled out and targeted people who who looked like a fan of Western pop culture or who engaged or looked like they would engage in protests against the Soviet government. The name "Lyubery" comes the Moscow industrial suburb of Lyubertsy, from which many of the teenage nationalist thugs came.
