The school earned this recognition in the 2004-2005 school year. [ [http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/sr/cs/ap/distingyear.asp?year=2005 Distinguished School Awards] California Schools Recognition Program]

Performing arts

Band and orchestra

The DJAMS band and orchestra program, directed by Linda Price, has performed in many events and represented their school. As their biggest event, all students acquire the privilege to perform in Disneyland in Anaheim in every school year.

Athletics

Physical education

The physical education (P.E.) program is one of the best middle school programs in the district. Other schools come and visit the school to watch the program. Each grade level has its own curriculum. The school does not have a gym, but it does have a large field, basketball courts, a rockwall added in 2006, an aerobics and dance room, and a fitness room with plenty of exercise machines and equipment. Some new equipment was added in 2006.

Trivia

* This middle school is connected with Don Juan Avila Elementary School, thus allowing Don Juan Avila serve grades from Kindergarten to 8th grade.
* 96% of DJAMS teachers have full teacher credentials, while 2% have emergency credentials. The other 2% is currently unknown. [ [http://school-ratings.com/school_details/30664646117642.html California School Ratings] Don Juan Avila Middle School]
* This is the only school that allows students in grades 6-8 to attend and buy books from the elementary school book fair.
* The P.E. grass field shows scenic views of the Saddleback Mountains near Rancho Santa Margarita. (Due to the building of a local hotel and other business-related structures, the scenic view from the P.E. grass fields have been blocked off.)
