Assam Engineering College established in 1955 is located in Jalukbari area of Guwahati city. It is the premier technical institute of the entire North East India.

Overview

Assam Engineering College was established in 1955, the first under graduate engineering college in North-Eastern India. It started with Civil Engineering, and within a few years other departments came into existence. Currently, it awards Bachelor's Degrees in eight different engineering disciplines and Master's Degrees in Computer Applications, Civil Engineering and Industrial and Production Engineering. There are Phd programs in Soil Mechanics & Hydraulics. It's annual festival called the "Pyrokinesis" attracts students from the entire region. With a well spread out lush green campus, AEC has been the hub centre of many intellectual and extracurricular activities in Assam for almost half a century.

Location

Assam Engineering College is situated at Jalukbari in South-West Guwahati, which is a landmark place in the colourful and chequered history of Assam. Bounded by the Gauhati University on the north, the Deepor Beel on the south, the Government Ayurvedic College on the east, and the Assam Police Radio Organisation on the west, Assam Engineering College spells a magical impact on the visitors. Well connected to the major city centres by open and wide roads, the College campus is about 9 km. away from the Guwahati Main Railway Station, 5 km. from the Inter-State Bus Terminus and 8 km. from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Borjhar.

Hostels

In all there are 9 hostels of which eight are for under graduate students (seven for males and one for females) and one for post graduate students (males). Each Hostel is self-contained with amenities such as a common room, a library, an indoor games room, a lounge and a dining hall with mess. All rooms are provided with internet access as well. The administrative head of each hostel, the Superintendent, is a senior faculty member. There are Hostel Committees at the Hostel level. The Hostel Committee of each hostel is composed of Superintendent and a student body of Block Monitors, Mess Secretaries, Sports Secretary, Cultural Secretary, Magazine Secretary, Welfare Secretary and Auditors. The committee is an exercise in self-governance and a successful one.

Master of Computer Applications Department

The department of Master of Computer Applications, established in 1990, offers M.C.A. courses of three years duration with an annual intake of 30 students and a student to teacher ratio of 3:1.

Well equipped three laboratories with Pentium, AMD Workstations, Servers running under WindowsNT, Linux, UNIX providing the environment to work on C, C++, VB, Java, Shell Programming and having high speed Internet connectivity.no aicte approval of the department.Head of the Department:- Jyoti Prakash Goswami.

Mechanical Engineering Department

The department of Mechanical Engineering, established in 1957 was one of the first departments of the college. It offers B.E. courses of four years with an annual intake of 60 students and a student to teacher ratio of 5:2.

Equipped with laboratory facilities, a library and experienced faculty, this branch has produced generations of mechanical engineers in Assam - in the private and public sector, and academia.

Civil Engineering Department

The department of Civil Engineering, established in 1656, was the first branch introduced in this college. The department boasts of highly qualified faculty and a well-equipped labs for field work.

The annual intake capacity is 60 students per semester in B.E. degree course and 25 students in the M.E. degree course. This department also offers a Ph.D. degree in Soil Mechanics & Hydraulics. However, it has a variable intake. The student to teacher ratio for each semester is 3:1.

Electrical Engineering Department

The Electrical Engineering Branch established its roots in Assam Engineering College in 1957 , as the second functioning branch.

The branch offers Bachelor of Engineering(B.E.) degree and has an annual intake of 60 students. The department has a student-teacher ratio of 5:1.

The curriculum of the department is mainly oriented to cater the needs of IT- Industry, Software Controlled Heavy and Light Electrical and Power Systems . Although no Post-graduate courses are offered at present , a proposal for the opening of two Post-graduate courses has been submitted viz. - Electric Energy Systems and Control & Instrumentation.

Electronics And Telecommunications Engineering Department

Established in 1983, it is the only department in a state government funded college to offer a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

It has an annual intake of 30 students, and a highly qualified teaching faculty, the ratio being 5:1. The department syllabus covers the major areas in the field of electronics and telecommunication.

Computer Science And Engineering Department

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Assam Engineering College, Guwahati was established on August 25, 1998 and hence the newest of the lot. Presently, the department is attached with the Electronics & Telecommunications Department.

The course available is Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.). The department has quality faculty members and a sophisticated computer centre. The duration of B.E. is 4 years having 8 semesters.

Chemical Engineering Department

The Chemical Engineering Department was started in 1963 and had an annual intake capacity of 30 students in B. E. degree which has now been increased to 60 this year (2007 batch onwards). The students to faculty ratio is 3:1 in each semester. This is the only department in the whole of North-east India offering an under-graduate course in chemical engineering. Recently the Gauhati University has recognized the laboratories of this department for research work in chemical engineering leading to a Ph.d degree under this University.

The department has been providing a four-year under-graduate course for Chemical Engineering. The core subjects includes Process Calculation, Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Mass Transfer Operations, Heat Transfer Operations, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Process Dynamics & Control, Petroleum Refinery Engineering & Petrochemicals, Process Equipment Design & Drawing, Fluid Flow Operation, Transport Phenomenon, Process Utilities, Process Instrumentation.

Industrial And Production Engineering Department

The branch of Industrial and Production Engineering was newly introduced in 1998 due to high demand of production engineers in various oil sectors, companies etc. The branch was recognised to AICTE in 2001.

Instrumentation Engineering Department

The branch of Instrumentation Engineering was newly introduced in 1998 due to high demand of instrumentation engineers in various industries, companies etc. The branch was recognised to AICTE in 2001.

In AEC, there is an intake of 20 instrumentation engineering students every year.

NCC

AEC is the premier institute leading the 30 Assam Engineers Company of the NCC. There is one ANO and one NCO among the college staff.

30 Assam Engr Coy is part of the 1 Assam Battalion within the NER directorate. The cadets in this Coy. get training in regular NCC skills as well as specific training related to Army Engineers.

Annual College Fest- Pyrokinesis

Pyrokinesis, the annual national level technical cum cultural festival of Assam Engineering College is very popular among all academic institutions of the north east in the last couple of years due to its unique composition and fostering of co-operation among the participating institutions.Pyrokinesis may, etymologically, mean something like "moving fire" or "setting things ablaze". 'Pyrokinesis' has multiple meanings. It may mean the confluence of thoughts which results in a new way of thinking, or the birth of a new concept, it may also mean resurgence or just human energy. In the end, it is up to the individual to embrace his/her perception of 'Pyrokinesis'. The three day long event showcase the various technical and cultural extravaganza.

The events include:

1. Technokinesis, the technical section of this fest, provides a common forum for all budding technocrats to prove their technical skills in a battle of wits and knowledge. It also gives the engineers to-be an insight into the cutting–edge technologies and contemporary path research through various lecture-sessions, workshops and discussion forums conducted by the experts in this field. The various events are -

Big-Gyan, the seminar,

Technocracy, the technical exhibition,

Wrangler, the debating contest,

Grey Cells, the quiz/trivia contest,

Brainstorm, the quiz/trivia contest for local schools,

Codewar, the software contest,

Skoar, the gaming contest,

Different Strokes, the painting contest,

Visual Impact, the photography contest.

2. The cultural section of the event includes a competition for bands, DJ nights, performance by local schools.
