Heating Hot Water

Heating Hot Water

Heating hot water is water used to heat a building. Like steam HVAC systems, the water carries heat as it goes through a pipe to its destination, which is some sort of radiator.

Unlike many steam systems, there must be a pump to circulate the water since it does not rise naturally like steam. (Hot water does rise above cold water because of its slightly reduced density, but this is very slight compared to the difference in density between water and steam, which is why it is normally inadequate).

Another notable difference is that steam systems require some means of collecting condensation.

Often a heat exchanger will be used to heat the water with steam, allowing a steam heating system to power a heating hot water system.
