Gavriil Kharitonovich Popov

Gavriil Kharitonovich Popov ( _ru. Гавриил Харитонович Попов; born 1936) is a Russian political figure and a reformer. He served as the mayor of Moscow from 1990 until he resigned in 1992.

Popov graduated Moscow Lomonosov University in political economy with the highest marks. He joined CPSU in 1959 and served as secretary of the Comsomol committee of his university. Popov remained in his economic faculty as aspirant, then docent, and since 1978 he became dean of the faculty. Yegor Gaydar, who would become a Prime Minister of Russia, was one of his students.

During Perestroyka Popov became heavily involved in politics. He left CPSU in 1990, due to his democrat views. In 1990, he was the first to be democratically elected Major of Moscow. He resigned in 1992.

Since 1992, Gavriil Kharitonovich returned to his science and economy researches. He is rector of the International University in Moscow.
