Wellingore

Wellingore is a small rural village in Lincolnshire, approximately 19 km (12 miles) south of Lincoln, England on the A607 in the district of North Kesteven. It is just south of Navenby.

History

Wellingore has been around for many years. In 1801 there were 559 residents. This peaked in 1861 at a total population of 943 people. At the last census in 1971 there were 618 people living in Wellingore. The largest building in Wellingore is [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/644043 Wellingore Hall] .

RAF Wellingore opened in 1935 and ran for ten years until it was decommissioned in 1945. It originally [http://raf-lincolnshire.info/wellingore/wellingore.htm opened] in 1917 as RFC Wellingore Heath. The [http://www.controltowers.co.uk/W-Z/Wellingore.htm control tower] was demolished, but several pillboxes and the Battle HQ building can still be found there today.

The village pubs are the " [http://www.themarquisofgranby.com Marquis of Granby] " (restaurant) and the "Red Lion Inn" (lunch time bar meals), both on "High Street". The church is dedicated to [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/101555 All Saints] , which is on [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/643994 the side] of the "Lincoln Cliff" escarpment. The Viking Way traverses through the village, [http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/643225 passing] from the side of the cliff edge to Ermine Street.
