Project David

Project David

Project David is a product announced by Philippines-based SpecOpS Labs in April 2004, which they claimed would fully implement the Windows API to allow Linux based systems to run Microsoft Windows applications without an actual Windows installation.

This claim was met with derision (and sometimes outright hostility) in the free software community, where the prevailing view, based on the information available at the time, was that Project David was most likely just a repackaged version of Wine or CrossOver.

SpecOps Labs seemed to take this to heart and updated their website. The updated information shows that Project David is a combination of both open source Wine and proprietary code. [http://www.specopslabs.com/projdav-framework.htm]

From their own marketing:

:"In addition, the DAVID framework includes a Usability layer to simplify the installation, un-installation, file navigation, configuration, and other tasks normally performed in running and maintaining Windows applications on a desktop machine. These are proprietary modules built on top of basic Linux OS services." :"The WINE Project was one of the pioneers of Linux-Windows compatibility and we are appreciative of WINE's 10+ years of service to the Linux community. As stated above: "our DAVID Technology is utilizing certain components of the WINE Project" any modifications that we make to these components will be made available to the open source community."

As of November 2006, the SpecOps Labs website is down for unknown reasons.
