Woodgate is an area in
Leicester . It lies next to theRiver Soar and is an important entrance to the city leading on to Frog Island.A busy junction,it lies at the intersection of Fosse Road North,Groby Road ,Blackbird Road and Buckminster Road. It forms part of the current regeneration plans for the cityThe area has suffered from industrial blight with the closure of The Premier Screw and Repetition factory with over 100 redundancies.The site has often been vandalised.The former pubs ,"The Friar Tuck" and "The Old Robin Hood " have long been derelict and been the scenes of crime including a murder.The former Nabisco factory site,home to a few small businesses and local Labour party offices was demolished in April 2008.This is the site of a new Aldi supermarket planned to be open by November 2008.As of August 2008,construction is well advanced on its framework,the car park and accompanying industrial units.Other local businesses lie down Storey Street including Daz's Gym.
The area lies in Fosse Ward for local government purposes and part of the Leicester West parliamentary constituency at Westminster,the local MP as of 2008/2009 is Patricia Hewitt.
Local shops include a Coop supermarket,Barclays Bank,Bargain Booze,Coral bookmakers,Spar supermarket and post office,Birch Bedrooms,Cyclevet,Beauty Works,Flowers of Elegance,Alliance& Leicester building society and Buck's Chippy.Other businesses include Abbey Oak Funeral Services,Ideal Homes furniture store,Martin's Meats butchers,Diamond Hand Carwash car valeting service,a Tapas bar,Leicester Audi car dealership,a newsagents and a Coombs Hampshires bread and cake shop,a second chip shop,Smith Harrods accountants, two hair stylists,Ming's Garden chinese takeaway,ATS workshop,Highcross Fish Bar and Beds 4 Everyone bed showroom.There is also the Woodgate Resources Centre used for local social gatherings:it was formerly a library.
Also near to Woodgate is the Woodgate Adventure Playground on the Rally Park which is used by local children for recreation.
