A Costa do Marisco, Galicia (Spain)

A Costa do Marisco, Galicia (Spain)

A Costa do Marisco, Galician translation of the original Spanish 1950s term given as a label to the entire coast of the Galicia region in Spain. The term can be translated into English as “Coast of the Seafood”.

Etymology

Literally “Coast of the Seafood” from the Spanish original term “Costa del Marisco” .

It must be noted that Galicia the most North-western corner of the Iberian Peninsula famous for its granite cliffs, golden sandy beaches, Celtiberian ruins and old Christian roots, has always been the most important fishing region of Spain; hence the name.

Historical Background

From the mid 1950s when Spain started to sell itself as a world holiday destination for tourists from all over Europe, the USA, and the UK in particular, the whole Iberian Peninsula had its entire coast labelled following the now famous “Costas” fashion: Costa Brava, Costa Dorada, Costa del Azahar, Costa Blanca, Costa Calida, Costa de Almeria, Costa Tropical, Costa del Sol, Costa de la Luz and Costa del Marisco (amongst others).
