The University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET), Kanpur,India, was founded in 1996, with a vision to serve the country in the twenty first century by offering its students advanced knowledge in engineering and technology, sciences and other areas of study. The intellectual stimulation that is provided to each member of UIET community of the Kanpur University serves to generate a desire in him/her to work wisely, creatively and effectively for the national development .

The Institute

The UIET Kanpur is a prestigious department of the Kanpur University. Although a part of the university, it is an autonomous institute. Even though it is a relatively new institute, UIET Kanpur has made its mark as one of the best technology institutes in Kanpur, which is already known to be a hub of technical education in India.

With an initial strength of 240 students, it now as more than 1,700 students on its rolls in six disciplines of Engineering and other career-oriented programs like MCA, BCA, M.Sc. (Electronics), M.Sc. (Bioinformatics) and Advanced PG Diploma in Bioinformatics. It is a self-financed institute dedicated to advancing knowledge and educating students in Engineering and Technology as well as Sciences.

Courses

The institute offers engineering courses in the following disciplines:
*Computer Science
*Electronics and Communication
*Mechanical Engineering
*Chemical Engineering
*Material Science and Metallurgy
*Information Technology

and also Master of Science Degree (M Sc) in Electronics

Over the years, there has been a continuous progress in the academic activities partly due to impressive improvements in facilities and infrastructure. The institute has spacious buildings, air cooled lecture halls , modern laboratories and separate tutorial rooms . In the last few years ,there has been special emphasis on developing the laboratories and to promote high level research activities in various streams of engineering ,technology and sciences .

The institute also holds seminars in many diverse areas like engineering, bioinformatics, science and personality development programmes from time to time.

Admission

Admission to the above courses is done once every year, through two competitive examinations
* UIET entrance examination - conducted by the institute in various cities
* A state level examination conducted by the State technical university UPTU

each testing the candidate in various aspects of three subjects of physics, chemistry and mathematics.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The institute has a considerably good collection of engineering , sciences and technology books in the central library of the university and has a separate section for UIET .The entire library has been made digital.

The computer science and engineering department has specialized labs like the microprocessor lab.

There is a well-equipped state-of-the-art auditorium with latest sound and lighting technology. This auditorium forms a centre stage of performance for both academic and cultural activities.

The institute, UIET Kanpur, located inside the Kanpur University campus is known for its architecture and lush-green campus.

Faculty

The institute has a well qualified faculty which works not only to help the students in their academic pursuits but also as counselors to guide them in their future plans.Various guest faculty and members of academic community visit UIET Kanpur to deliver lectures and courses on various courses regularly.

Culture

The institute has a culture of holding various extracurricular events like
* Spandan - The annual cultural festival held within the institute premises.
* Techmart - The annual technical festival.

A formal welcome event for the new comers into the institute and a convocation ceremony for the students who are in their final year and are about to graduate out of UIET Kanpur is held annually.

These cultural events are held by and for the students with support from alumini and faculty members.

Higher studies after UIET

A large number of students of this institute qualify in GATE every year and have secured very high percentiles in the past years. Many of them are studying or have passed their M.Tech/MS/MBA programmes at various IITs, IIMs, IISc Bangalore, IIIT, DA-IICT, IT-BHU, BITS Pilani, XLRI Jamshedpur and many others are pursuing their higher studies abroad .

In the recent years, a large number of students of UIET have had job offers even before graduating out of this institute. Many of them are employed in top-notch companies in India and abroad.
