TrID is an utility designed to identify file types from their binary signatures. It is extensible and can be trained to recognize new formats in a fast and automatic way. TrID uses a database of definitions which describe recurring patterns for supported file types. The database of definitions can be expanded by writing new file format definition XML files, aided by the [http://mark0.net/soft-tridscan-e.html TrIDScan] utility.

The original version is a command line utility, but there is also a GUI version called [http://mark0.net/soft-tridnet-e.html TrIDNet] .
