It is the official center for the arts and media for the West Zone in Lee County's School Choice Program; is part of the Lee County School District; and currently serves approximately 1550 students. The official school colors are red and white and the athletic teams are known as "The Red Knights". North Fort Myers High School offers AICE, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, Vocational, Honors and general education classes, in addition to its Arts & Media program and the North High Collegiate Academy.
In 2009, North High was awarded a grade of "A" by the Florida Department of Education. North was the only school in the Lee County School District to be awarded an A rating for both 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 academic school years.[1]
On December 7, 2009, North High launched a new version of its school web site. With the new site, students at North are given the ability to create and manage online student portfolios, allowing them to post work done during the school year. In February, 2010, the school added the University of Cambridge's AICE program to its curriculum offerings.[3] The Advanced International Certificate of Education is a specialized, English language curriculum offered to students in the higher levels of secondary school intended to prepare them for success at the university level. Students who complete the requirements of the program will earn a Cambridge AICE diploma, and are automatically eligible for the maximum Florida Bright Futures scholarship.[4]

History
North Fort Myers High School was established in 1962 and renovated in 1995. The school has received a grade of "A" from the state of Florida for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic school years, and is the only school in Lee County to do so.[5] In the 2008-2009 school year, North High met 97% of the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria as defined by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.[6]
There are a total of 84 teachers on staff at North, and 31 (37%) hold a Masters degree or higher.[7] In addition, ten (10) teachers (12%) are adjunct professors at Edison Community College.[7] With so many teachers possessing this qualification, North High is able to offer the most dual enrollment (DE) courses on its campus of all the high schools in the district.[8]
The school currently houses approximately 1,575 students. In 2008, the student population consisted of approximately 23% minority, 12% gifted, and 38% of students qualified for free and reduced lunch.[9] In 2004, North High was named as a Center for the Arts and Media. Today, there are approximately 450 students enrolled in the arts and media program majoring in theatre arts, media arts, instrumental music, vocal music, strings, visual art, or dance.
From 2002-09, North High was the number one chosen high school in the West Zone.[10] Incoming freshmen have the opportunity to attend an orientation camp in August, where students learn about North High programs, clubs, and school traditions.

North was the only school in the Lee County School District to be awarded an A rating for both 2008 and 2009.[11] In 2008, North Fort Myers High School was awarded a grade of "A" by the Florida Department of Education.[11] The 2007-08 academic year marked the first time in school history that North High had received an "A" rating.[12]

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or the FCAT, is the standardized test used in the primary and secondary public schools of Florida. First administered statewide in 1998[1], it replaced the State Student Assessment Test (SSAT) and the High School Competency Test (HSCT).

In 2010, Thirty eight students at North Fort Myers High School earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams, up from fourteen students in 2009. This includes six students that earned the highest award, the AP Scholar with Distinction.
Dual Enrollment
Dual Enrollment and Early Admissions are programs that allow high school students to take Edison State College courses while also earning high school credit toward graduation.
In 2009-10, students at North Fort Myers High School earned a total of 2,365 free college credits through the dual enrollment and early admissions programs. This represents a 56% increase from the previous year.

Criteria
Admission is based on a combination of the following:

Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE)
The Advanced International Certificate of Education is a specialized, English language curriculum offered to students in the higher levels of secondary school intended to prepare them for success at the university level. Students who complete the requirements of the program will earn a Cambridge AICE diploma, and are automatically eligible for the maximum Florida Bright Futures scholarship.[4]
North High students who are in the AICE program are enrolled in pre-AICE courses in Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math during their 9th and 10th grade academic years. Upon successful completion of the Pre-AICE track at the end of the 10th grade year, students choose from a variety of options, with the assistance of their academic adviser, to complete their high school requirements.
The AICE program and cirriculum is overseen by the University of Cambridge, an institution consistently ranked as one of the top 5 academic universities in the world.[13] It is a flexible, broad-based, two-year curriculum, which is offered worldwide at schools and colleges in over 150 countries.[14]
AICE Diploma
The AICE Diploma requires passing exams in at least six courses (credits). Each Cambridge AS Level Exam counts as one full credit. A Cambridge A Level Exam counts as a double credit qualification. Students must pass at least one exam in each of the three subject areas (Mathematics & Sciences, Languages and Arts & Humanities) and an additional three examinations in any area.[15]
Students must take at least one class from each of the 3 subject groups, the class choice is up to them. The remaining classes can be made up from any combination the student chooses.[15]

AICE in Florida
The Florida Legislature has identified AICE as a graduation option and acceleration mechanism through which high school students can be awarded up to 30 hours of college credit.[16] Students earning the AICE Diploma qualify for the maximum Florida Bright Futures tuition scholarship and students completing the curriculum can earn the Florida Medallion Scholars Tuition Award.[17]
Center for Arts & Media
North High is the official Arts Center in the West Zone. The Arts Center offers a variety of courses in visual, performing, and media arts. Students who are currently enrolled in high school or who are currently enrolled in eighth grade are eligible to audition and participate in the arts program. Admission
Admission to the North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media West Zone program is by audition only. In addition to the Arts & Media application, a West Zone school application should also be completed according to the school's published timeline. Should a student be accepted into the Arts & Media program following their audition, that student may be released from the school assigned by School Assignment in order to attend the North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media program. All students enrolling in the arts and media program must complete four semesters in the program to be considered for a waiver should they choose to leave the program. (School District of Lee County Administrative Regulation 1.63)
Auditions
To attend the North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media, students are selected by an audition process for one of the seven majors. Arts and Media students take a full academic program throughout the day integrated with arts and media classes that will be offered in two-period blocks. A graduate of North Fort Myers High School Center for Arts and Media is expected to be prepared to continue in the art and media field or to succeed in the finest liberal arts colleges.
Auditions for the Center for Arts and Media are held every spring. North High currently offers five tracks within the Arts & Media program: Dance, Media Arts, Musical Arts, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts. Students interested in becoming part of one or more programs must first pick up an application from the school. Students who are currently enrolled in a West Zone high school or who are currently enrolled in eighth grade at a West Zone middle school are eligible to audition and participate in the Center for Arts and Media.
Animation and Game Development Academy
North High's Animation and Game Development Academy (AGDA) introduces students to the fundamental principles of game and simulation development. This program is a four-year sequence of project-based courses oriented to game and simulation development that align relevant academic, employment, and workplace standards.
AGDA is designed to prepare a student for a career as a Game/Simulation Designer, Digital Media Artist, and Digital Media Specialist. The content includes practical experiences in game/simulation conceptualization, design, storyboarding, development methodologies, audio–sound effects design and production, video–special effects design and production, and implementation issues.
At the center of the AGDA program is 3ds Max, an industry-leading gaming and animation software program that has been used to develop many blockbuster films including: Jurassic Park, The Matrix Reloaded, King Kong, Spider-Man 3, and the X-Men franchise. North High is the only school in the district to offer a four-year program centered around 3ds Max.
Students who enroll in the Animation and Game Development program have a unique opportunity to experience state-of-the-art, professional-quality training in the fields of gaming animation, design and development.[citation needed]
3ds Max is the same software used in engineering companies to do plant layouts. Architectural companies also use this software to present walk-throughs of new buildings to clients, and companies like Pixar studios use Max to create animated movies like Shrek and Finding Nemo.

Business & Technology Education
The focus of North High's Technology & Career Education Department is to make students aware of the many changes in technology. Through its courses in Accounting Applications, Computing for College and Careers, Administrative Office Technology, Digital Design, and Cooperative Business Education, instruction is provided that helps the students meet the many challenges in today’s society. Completion of a three-course program can qualify a student for the Bright Futures-Gold Seal Scholarship.
North High places a special emphasis on technology and its use as an accelerator for teachers, staff, and students. There are currently over 600 computers on campus available for student use. The school provides eight dedicated computer labs for its engineering, technology, and video production classes, as well as five additional labs that can be reserved by teachers whose rooms are not equipped with computers.
AutoCAD and Architectural Desktop
AutoCAD Architecture software, the AutoCAD for architects, enables instantaneous productivity and smooth collaboration within a software environment you already know. Students at North High use AutoCAD and Architectural Desktop software as purpose-built architectural design and drafting tools make for efficient, intuitive creation of construction documents.
3D modeling and animation
Many of the courses at North involve products from Adobe Systems. All student workstations feature Adobe mainstays such as Flash, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Premiere Pro, and are all used extensively by the Arts & Media students on campus. In addition, all student stations at North have the complete Adobe CS4 Design Premium Suite installed to give students the best possible access to these applications.
In the area of visualization and animation, students at North use a modeling, rendering, animation package called Autodesk 3dsMax.

Digital photography
North High’s digital photography classes are designed to teach students satisfactory skills and gain knowledge of the art and science of Digital SLR Photography. Students will develop technical skills that lead to the success in Digital SLR camera operation, as well as a working knowledge of the language of photography.
The courses allow students to develop a personal awareness and knowledge of photography as a communication process. Students are taught how to create, manipulate, and optimize images for print and the Web using Adobe Photoshop CS4. Web design
Web page design is a process of conceptualization, planning, modeling, and execution of electronic media content delivery via the Internet in the form of technologies (such as markup languages) suitable for interpretation and display by a web browser or other web-based graphical user interfaces (GUIs). North High web design students use various application within the Adobe CS4 Premium Suite, primarily Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Dreamweaver.
Industry certifications
During the 2009-10 school year, students at North earned a combined total of 730 industry certifications, including 271 certifications for Adobe Photoshop CS4 and 356 certifications for Microsoft Office 2007.
Overall, North High students earned more certifications in Adobe Flash (78), Adobe Photoshop (271), and Microsoft Office 2007 (356) than any other school in Lee County, respectively. Students also earned forty (21) certifications in Adobe Dreamweaver and a total of four certifications in AutoCAD 2010. 83 students earned a Master Certification in Microsoft Office, meaning they gained certification in four separate Office 2007 applications: Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Student computers are equipped with the latest software from companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and AutoDesk, including Office 2007, AutoDesk 3dsMax, AutoCAD 2009, and the complete Adobe CS4 Master Collection. Currently, North High employs seven (7) Adobe Certified Educators, as well as five (5) educators certified in Office 2007.
Students who enroll in technology electives use various software applications, including Office 2007, Adobe CS4, AutoCAD 2009, and Studio 3ds Max. North High is an official testing center for Adobe, Microsoft and Certiport, and offers students the ability to gain valuable certifications in applications such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, and the full Microsoft Office suite of applications.

North High Media CenterThere are currently over 500 computers on the North High campus that are accessible by students. Almost all of those are located in student classrooms that have been set up specifically for use as a computer lab. The classroom labs vary in size, but most are set up with 32 stations.
All student computers are standardized with a base image, which includes a baseline set of software applications. The main applications used by students at North are Microsoft Office 2007, AutoCAD 2009, 3dsMax, and Adobe's CS4 Master Collection Suite.
North High currently has seven computer labs available to all teachers, on a reservation basis. The lab schedule(s) are managed via North High's Intranet web site, which allows teachers to browse the various lab schedules, reserve labs for specific dates and times, and also cancel reservations if the need arises. Three of the seven labs are located next to the school's Media Center, in an area the students have nicknamed "The SuperLab".

North High SuperLabStudent computers at North High have a wide range of software applications installed. Many of those applications, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe CS4, AutoCAD, and 3dsMax are also used by the vast majority of today's design and technology professionals. The media center
The North High Media Center currently has 120 computers for student use. The center's architecture is somewhat unique for a high school, the most obvious being the 30 foot ceilings. On the far wall is a mural created specifically for the school by a former North High alumni.
The computers in the Media Center are organized into four different lab areas, and can be used by teachers as part of a scheduled class, or by individual students who have permission to be in the Media Center.
The SuperLab
The SuperLab currently has 100 machines for student use. The lab is grouped in three smaller labs, which can be used independently or together as part of a larger presentation. In addition to student workstations, each lab also contains individual teacher stations and network printers.
Although it is open to all teachers, the SuperLab is primarily reserved by Reading and English classes who work with TeenBiz3000, a web-based, individualized reading and writing instruction solution that has been implemented district-wide.
Knights Scholar Mentoring Program
The mission of the Knights Scholar program is to provide academic mentorship and a positive role model to the students of North Fort Myers High School. Its purpose is to provide leadership, guidance, and support to students through a mentoring relationship between freshman and upper-class students.
- The primary goal of the program is to improve academic performance through direct interaction between the student and a mentor. Mentors are members of the National Honor Society .
- To provide academic support and personal guidance for students which will enable them to better understand the challenges of high school and enhance their opportunities for success

Fort Myers High School is an International Baccalaureate high school in Lee County, Florida, and is North's biggest rival.
The varsity football game between North Fort Myers and Fort Myers, on October 27, 2006, was covered live by ESPN on their sports channel ESPNU, due to the fact that North High running back Noel Devine was one of the top high school football prospects in the 2007 recruiting class. The Red Knights defeated the Green Wave in that game by a score of 24 to 6. The win marked the North's first victory over Fort Myers since 1994. In the game, Noel Devine rushed for 164 yards on 26 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 13 and 34 yards.
Fort Myers has won 14 of the last 15 matchups between the two schools.
