* 1878 – The government of France enacts a law to create a public loan (redeemable revenue 3% in 75 years) to finance the completion of the French rail network.
* 1881 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad connects to El Paso, Texas.
* 1884 – The Pine Bluff and Swan Lake Railway, in Arkansas (later to become part of the Cotton Belt Railroad), is incorporated.

20th century

* 1905 – The Pennsylvania Railroad inaugurates the fastest freight train schedule in the world, operating between Chicago, Illinois, and New York City in 18 hours.
* 1917 – The 104th Street and 111th Street stations on New York City Subway's BMT Jamaica Line open.

21st century

* 1944 – Michael R. Haverty, president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway 1989-1995 and president of the Kansas City Southern Railway 1995-present, is born.
