International Network for Social Network Analysis

The International Network for Social Network Analysis is the professional association of social network analysis. [ [http://www.intute.ac.uk/socialsciences/cgi-bin/fullrecord.pl?handle=sosig1059997247-25098 Intute: Social Sciences] , Intute website.] The rapid increase in awareness of social networks, social network software, and social networking has led to lively discussions and influence beyond sheer numbers.

Membership, history and output

INSNA's membership consists of more than 1,000 social network analysis researchers, who have a website (see External links) and an active listserve discussion group.

INSNA has always been international and interdisciplinary. Most members are social scientists, but there is significant involvement by mathematicians, statisticians, the business world (especially management consultants), and social networking software creators and analysts.

It was founded in 1977 by Barry Wellman, a sociologist, who felt the need to connect scattered network analysts, dispersed across countries and fields. [ [http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman/vita/index.html Barry Wellman] biography: "Netlab" at the University of Toronto website.] It was headed by communications scientist William Richards from 2005 until his sudden death in August 2007. [ [http://www.sfu.ca/~cmnsweb/people/faculty/richards_b/ William Richards'] profile at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia (Canada), website.] Vice-president George Barnett, a communications scientist at the University at Buffalo, succeeded him.

As well as publishing a triannual journal Connections on the subject, INSNA also:

*Runs SOCNET, a listserv mailing-list for the subject.
*Hosts the International Sunbelt Social Network Conference annually. [Annual [http://www.insna.org/INSNA/sunbelt_inf.html International Sunbelt Social Network Conference] : INSNA website.] See list below.
*Publishes a quarterly journal, "Social Networks". [ [http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/505596/description#description Social Networks] , quarterly journal.]
*Publishes the online "Journal of Social Structure", irregular periodicity. [ [http://www.cmu.edu/joss/ Journal of Social Structure] , online journal, irregular periodicity.]
*Provides links to researchers around the world.
