Sister cities of Denver, Colorado

Sister cities of Denver, Colorado

Denver is the second-oldest sister city in the United States in its relationship with Brest, France, started in 1948. In 1947, Amanda Knecht, a teacher at East High School, visited WWII-ravaged Brest. When she returned, she shared her experiences in the city with her students, and her class raised $32,000 to help rebuild the children's wing of Brest's hospital. The gift led to the development of the sister city program with Brest [ [http://www.denversistercities.org/brest.php Sister City History] . Denver Sister Cities International. Retrieved on November 11, 2006. ] . Denver's Sister Cities International develops programs to foster relations between all of Denver's sister cities. Each of them have parks in the city named after them [ [http://www.denvergov.org/Parks/817926template2jump.asp] . List of sister city parks in Denver. * Axum, Ethiopia
* Brest, France
* Chennai, India
* Cuernavaca, Mexico
* Karmiel, Israel
* Kunming, People's Republic of China
* Nairobi, Kenya
* Potenza, Italy
* Takayama, Japan

In addition, the Denver Regional Council of Governments (consisting of the city and 51 other local governments) has established a "sister city" relationship with the Baghdad Governorate, one of Iraq's eighteen provinces.
