] primarily the syndicated Hippie Radio oldies format. WHPI will also begin airing Peoria Rivermen hockey games for the 2008-09 season.

History

The 101.1 MHz frequency was assigned to Glasford, Illinois in the late 1990s by the FCC, and a license was issued soon after.fact|date=September 2007 The original license callsign was WBDM. The call lsign was changed to WRVP on 1999-07-13cite web

] and the station used the nickname "101.1 The River".fact|date=September 2007 The River was born as an AC station and was attempting to compete with heritage 50 kW signal WSWT. This did not last long, as just several months later the plug was pulled in favor of a simulcast of sister station 98.5. "98.5 & 101.1 The Party".fact|date=September 2007 98.5 WPPY and 101.1 swapped callsigns on 2000-07-27.

In 2004, 101.1 began simulcasting the Pekin, Illinois station WVEL (AM), which has long suffered from a weak signal outside of Pekin, fact|date=September 2007 and on 2004-03-04, 101.1 dropped the WRVP callsign and became WVEL-FM.

In September 2006 as part of a massive station sale between multiple Peoria groups, Regent sold 101.1 to newly formed Independence Media. 105.7FM was being sold from AAA Entertainment to Regent, and Regent indicated it did not want the Hot AC format currently on the signal. On 2006-09-26, "Mix 105.7" (WXMP) and its format moved to the weaker 101.1 and changed its name to "Mix 101.1" when the WIXO callsign and its "99X Rocks" format moved from 99.9 to 105.7.

At midnight on the morning of 2007-09-19, the station changed its its branding to "Hippie Radio 101.1".cite web

] The callsign was changed to WHPI to match the name.
