The game was a sequel to "Lakers versus Celtics" video game using the same engine. Following the same format, the game was named after the two teams that appeared in the NBA Finals.

Play mode

The game could be played in various ways: players could play against each other, or against the computer. Games against the computer were divided into two levels, "exhibition" or "playoffs". Players could pick from one of the 16 teams that had gone to the playoffs in the NBA the year before the game was released. Games could be configured for 2, 5, 8 or 12 minute quarters.

* It was the first game in which Electronic Arts tried to establish itself as a sports network called "EASN", Electronic Arts Sports Network.
* This basketball game uses a star underneath the player to let users know which player they are controlling. The feature would come to all sports games in the future. Previous basketball games often highlighted the players socks black if they were being controlled by the player. Problems came about on small TVs, where gamers had a difficult time seeing the differences.

* This is one of the few NBA titles to have Michael Jordan on the Bulls' roster.
