The 5th East Asian Games will be an international multi-sport event that takes place in Hong Kong, from December 5 to December 13, 2009.

Bidding and organisation

In 2003, Hong Kong, China; Chinese Taipei; and Mongolia entered the bidding process as potential host cities for the 5th East Asian games. Mongolia subsequently withdrew, but on November 3, 2003 at a meeting in Macao, Hong Kong was selected as the host.

June 2004 saw the formation of the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong East Asian Games, chaired by Timothy Fok, president of Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong.

Logo and slogan

During the 2005 games in Macao, a competition was held to determine the logo for the 5th East Asian games. On July 11, 2005 the current "fireworks" emblem, designed by Mr Yick Tat-wa, was selected as winner.

At the Asian Games in 2006, a slogan contest was held and it was decided that "Be the Legend" (創造傳奇一刻) was the best; fitting well with the ideals of athletes reaching their potential and achieving legendary victories. This slogan was submitted by secondary school student Ms Choi Sau Chu.

There is presently a third competition running, which will determine the theme of the venues involved in the games.
