General Sir Peter Mervyn Hunt GCB, DSO, OBE (1916 - 1988) was Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army.

Army career

Educated at Wellington College, Peter Hunt was commissioned into the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders [ [http://www.davidhorsfield.org.uk/ch42.asp David Horsfield memoirs] ] .

Hunt saw action during the Second World War and as a temporary lieutenant-colonel was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for service in North West Europe in 1945. In 1964 he was appointed General Officer Commanding the 17th Ghurka Division which was deployed to Borneo the following year [ [http://www.regiments.org/formations/uk-div/div17gr.htm Regiments.org: 17th Ghurka Division] ] . Then in 1966 he was appointed Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and in 1968 went on to be Commander of Far East Land Forces [ [http://www.regiments.org/formations/uk-cmdarmy/os-fare.htm Regiments.org: Far East Command] ] . In 1970 he became Commander of the British Army of the Rhine [ [http://www.regiments.org/formations/uk-cmdarmy/os-baor.htm Regiments.org: BAOR] ] . He served as Chief of the General Staff from 1973 to 1976 when he retired from the British Army.

Later career
