Adams County is a rural county located in the state of Idaho, established in 1911. As of the 2000 Census the county had a population of 3,476 (2005 estimate: 3,591) [http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/16/16003.html] . The county seat is CouncilGR|6.

Adams County is named in honor of President John Adams. Adams County is home to the Idaho ground squirrel, and the Brundage Mountain ski area, east of New Meadows.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,370 square miles (3,548 km²), of which, 1,365 square miles (3,534 km²) of it is land and 5 square miles (14 km²) of it (0.40%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,476 people, 1,421 households, and 1,031 families residing in the county. The population density was 2 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 1,982 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.29% White, 1.41% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.92% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 25.6% were of American, 17.9% German, 11.8% English and 7.0% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 1,421 households out of which 28.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.30% were married couples living together, 5.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% were non-families. 23.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.83.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 4.60% from 18 to 24, 22.60% from 25 to 44, 32.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 105.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $28,423, and the median income for a family was $32,335. Males had a median income of $29,097 versus $14,408 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,908. About 11.70% of families and 15.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.90% of those under age 18 and 11.70% of those age 65 or over.
