Stuart Carlson

Stuart Carlson

Stuart Carlson is a former editorial cartoonist for the "Milwaukee Journal Sentinel". His cartoons usually follow the moderate editorial stance of that paper. He came to the "Milwaukee Sentinel" in 1983, and stayed with the company after it merged with the "Milwaukee Journal" in 1995.

On July 31, 2008, www.milwaukeeworld.com reported that Carlson was losing his position at the Milwaukee newspaper as the company trims 130 positions due to declining revenue.

"'Fraid it's true," Carlson wrote in an email to the website. "Given the cutbacks planned at the JS I was told they could no longer 'justify' having a full-time editorial cartoonist. Although I'm taking the buyout, I'm not going willingly. I'm being forced out."

His work is distributed nationwide by the Universal Press Syndicate. Awards include the 1995 John Fischetti Award; his selection as the nation's best cartoonist in 1991 by the National Press Foundation; numerous best cartoon of the year honors from the Milwaukee Press Club; the 1986 Robert W. Gillespie Sentinel Staff Award for Excellence; and the 1988 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Young Alumni Award.

His work has appeared in the "New York Times", "Newsweek", the "Washington Post", "Barron's", "Playboy" and on ABC News' "Nightline".
