Steven Englebright

Steven Englebright (born August 24, 1946) represents District 4 in the New York State Assembly, which comprises several areas of Suffolk County Long Island and the North Shore, including Port Jefferson Station, parts of Coram, Centereach, Selden and Lake Grove. He is a Democrat.

First elected to the New York State Assembly in 1992, Englebright currently serves as the Chairman of the Aging Committee, as well as being a member of the Standing Committee on Education, on Energy, Higher Education, Arts and Sports Development.

Some of his signature pieces of legislation include the Pesticide Use Reporting Act-enacted in 1996-which laid the template for studying the potential links between widespread pesticide use and the high rate of cancer found among certain communities in Long Island. He is also responsible for passage of the Solar Choice Act, the Long Island North Shore Heritage Area Act and the Assisted Living Reform Act of 2004. He is also one of the primary sponsors of the Healthy Schools Initiative.

Englebright served as a Suffolk County legislator from 1983 until his election to the New York State Assembly. Prior to his role as a legislator he served as Curator of Geologic Collections at SUNY at Stony Brook and the founding director of the Museum of Long Island Natural Sciences.

He holds a B.A. from the University of Tennessee and an M.S. in Paleontology/Sedimentology from SUNY-Stony Brook.
