*Being made refers to a formal induction into the Mafia, or the status one achieves by virtue of this ceremony.
*Being made (or read) is having one's real identity detected. This applies to undercover law enforcement officers (by criminal targets), transgendered individuals (by a stranger), permit-holders legally possessing a concealed sidearm, or many other people in many situations.
