Through this time, three main companies have published Star Trek fiction: Bantam Books (from 1967 to 1981), Ballantine Books (from 1974 to 1978), and, since 1979, Pocket Books.[1][2]

Pocket Books novels

The script adaptation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was actually published more than a year before the Bantam Books series of novels concluded. The paperback novels are sequentially numbered until early 2002 (#1 to #97, including the adaptations for Star Trek TMP, Star Trek II, and Star Trek III), except for the expanded length novels and hardcovers reprinted as paperbacks. Several of the Pocket novels have been republished as omnibus editions or with modified titles when they become part of an arc or a series, such as "The Yesterday Saga", "Worlds Apart", and "Rihannsu".

The books were republished by Titan Books in the United Kingdom, with a different numbering system, from 1987 to 1993.

† movie script novelization ‡ hardcover first printing

The TOS movie novelizations were published in the UK by various publishers, including Futura, Panther/Granada and Grafton. "The Entropy Effect" was first published in the UK by Orbit Books.

The "Shatnerverse"

Beginning in 1995, William Shatner, the actor who played Captain Kirk, launched a series of novels, often referred to as the "Shatnerverse" novels. They work on the premise that Captain Kirk was brought back to life after the events of the movie Star Trek Generations, and are not generally considered part of the continuity established by Pocket Books for their novels. Shatner's co-writers for these novels are Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. With only one exception, their names appear on the title pages of each of the Shatnerverse novels. The exception was due to a production error for the first U.S. printing of the paperback edition of The Ashes of Eden and was corrected in subsequent printings. Beginning with Captain's Peril, the Reeves-Stevenses have also been credited on the novels' covers.

  • Odyssey
  • The Mirror Universe Trilogy

eBooks

In 2006, Pocket expanded its e-book program beyond the Corps of Engineers series to include other parts of the Trek universe, beginning with a 40th anniversary miniseries, Mere Anarchy:

  • Mere Anarchy
    • Book 1: Things Fall Apart by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore, August 2006
    • Book 2: The Centre Cannot Hold by Mike W. Barr, September 2006
    • Book 3: Shadows of the Indignant by Dave Galanter, October 2006
    • Book 4: The Darkness Drops Again by Christopher L. Bennett, February 2007
    • Book 5: The Blood-Dimmed Tide by Howard Weinstein, March 2007
    • Book 6: Its Hour Come Round by Margaret Wander Bonanno, April 2007
  • All of the titles are taken from William Butler Yeats' poem The Second Coming.

Vanguard (2005-present)

Star Trek: Vanguard is a "spinoff" of the original series, set aboard a starbase and featuring a new mix of characters, e.g. instead of focusing on a first officer, engineer, and science officer, the main characters include an intelligence officer, a reporter, and a JAG officer.

Novelizations

FotoNovels

FotoNovels were printed in the late 1970s before home video was widely available. They included direct adaptations of actual color television episode frames (with word balloons) in a graphic novel format. These books were the closest thing to viewing episodes on demand (strangely, in Day of the Dove, the features of Mara [Susan Howard] are obscured). Other television series and movies of the late 1970s, such as Battlestar Galactica also used this format.

Listed below are books from Star Trek: The Original Series (Mandala Productions/Bantam Books):

  • FotoNovel 1: The City on the Edge of Forever
  • FotoNovel 2: Where No Man Has Gone Before
  • FotoNovel 3: The Trouble with Tribbles
  • FotoNovel 4: A Taste of Armageddon
  • FotoNovel 5: Metamorphosis
  • FotoNovel 6: All Our Yesterdays
  • FotoNovel 7: The Galileo Seven
  • FotoNovel 8: A Piece of the Action
  • FotoNovel 9: The Devil in the Dark
  • FotoNovel 10: Day of the Dove
  • FotoNovel 11: The Deadly Years
  • FotoNovel 12: Amok Time.

Movie adaptations from Pocket Books:

  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Photostory, edited by Richard J. Anobile
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: The Photostory, edited by Richard J. Anobile (in black & white).

This series spanned all of the Star Trek TV shows that had aired episodes (except Star Trek: Enterprise) and was part of the numbered Pocket Books series.

Day of Honor (1997)

The Captain's Table (1998)

The concept behind this series is an exclusive club, which is not anchored in time or space, open only to starship captains. The price of admission is to regale the other members with a story of a previous adventure. Spanning every incarnation of Star Trek, "Captain's Table" novels typically use the club as a framing device for flashback stories.

The Dominion War (1998)

The Badlands (2000)

Section 31 (2001)

Dark Passions (2001)

This two-part saga takes place within the Mirror Universe during the DS9-Voyager era.

Original Audiobooks

Many Star Trek novels have been adapted for audio, but these are the only original stories produced exclusively for audio.

  • Cacophony (J.J. Malloy) Captain Sulu adventure
  • Envoy (L.A. Graf) Captain Sulu adventure
  • Star Trek: Klingon (Hilary Bader) based upon the videogame, but more than just an adaptation of the game's novelization
  • Star Trek: Borg (Hilary Bader) based upon the videogame
  • Spock vs. Q (Scripted by Cecelia Fannon) a battle of wits between Spock and Q with the fate of the Earth hanging in the balance, more of a radio play than an audio book
