Claudio Bunster

Claudio Bunster Weitzman (born Claudio Teitelboim Weitzman on April 15, 1948 in Santiago) is a Chilean scientist.

Bunster studied Sciences at the University of Chile (1969), Santiago and received his Ph.D in Physics from Princeton University, U.S. in 1973. He remained at the university, at the Institute for Advanced Study and also at the University of Texas, until 1984. In the same year, he co-founded and was Director of the Centro de Estudios Científicos (CECS), Santiago, Chile, an independent and autonomous body whose central aim is to perform, promote and diffuse top quality scientific research both within the scientific community and to the general public.

Bunster is currently Director of CECS in Valdivia, a full-fledged Millennium Science Institute since 2000, and he continues to be a long-term member at the IAS. He was also President of the Presidential Advisory Committee for Scientific Matters from 1995 to 2000 and was Science Advisor to Chilean President Eduardo Frei.

In 1995 Bunster was awarded Chile's National Prize in Exact Sciences. In 2005 he was elected foreign associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences.

In 2005, Bunster changed his last name, after discovering his real father was Álvaro Bunster (a lawyer), and not writer and Communist politician Volodia Teitelboim.
