Tzedek

Tzedek

Tzedek is the Hebrew word for righteousness and justice. It is written in the Torah "Justice, Justice, Thou shalt pursue." צדק צדק תרדוף [Deut. 16.20]

Tzedek, like the Jewish Commandement to "heal the world" (Tikkun Olam), is an important part of the Jewish obligation to demand justice, perform charity, protect the environment and in general to act righteously.

Tzedekah means "giving righteously" in Hebrew.

The english translations of both these words are often used by anglophones to communicate the obligation on Jews, and indeed by all, to pursue social justice, human rights, environmental sustainability and other humanistic and ecologically grounded values.
