Vairano Patenora is a "comune" (municipality) in the Province of Caserta in the Italian region Campania, located about 60 km north of Naples and about 35 km northwest of Caserta. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 6,330 and an area of 43.7 km².All demographics and other statistics: Italian Statistical Institute Istat.]

Vairano Patenora borders the following municipalities: Ailano, Caianello, Marzano Appio, Pietravairano, Pratella, Presenzano, Raviscanina, Riardo, Teano.

History

The first inhabitants of Vairano lived 700,000 years ago. in fact remains found on our hills certify that primitive men lived in caves or in wooden huts. One of the first civilization was Opici one who were followed by the Etruscans, the Samnites and by the Sidicini. Sanniti built on our hills fortified cities as we known by the remains visible on Montano, Caievola and Monteforte. In 290 B.C. our territory went under Romans’ control and even now we can see old Roman bridge in a place called Frattelle.

Between the 6th and the 9th centuries Lombards invaded Vairano and built a first fortress which was used to defend themselves against Saracen and other invasions. In the eleventh century Normans subdued Longobardi and in 1191 Enrico II of Suevia gave Roffredo dell’Isola, Montecassino abbot, the castle.

The fortress underwent several trasformations and rebuildings during centuries: the most important was made by Innico d'Avalos in the 16th century.

In 1590 Vairano and Marzanello were bought by baron Mormile who turned the military fortress into a residential seat. Mormile owned Vairano until 1806.It's very important to underline that in Vairano there was historical meet of Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II at Taverna della Catena where was ratified the Unity of Italy.
