HMS Boxer

Nine ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS "Boxer", named after the competitor in a boxing match.

* The first "Boxer" was a small gun vessel launched in 1797 and sold in 1809.
* The second "Boxer" was a 12 gun brig that was captured by the US Navy during the War of 1812.
* The third "Boxer" was a paddle steamer formerly called "Ivanhoe" bought by the Royal Navy in 1837 and sold in 1841.
* The fourth "Boxer" was to have been a gun vessel. Construction was started in 1846 but she was cancelled before being completed.
* The fifth "Boxer" was a screw gunboat which was launched in 1855 and broken up at Malta in 1865.
* The sixth "Boxer" was launched in 1868 and sold for scrap in 1887.
* The seventh "Boxer" was a destroyer launched in 1894 and sunk in a collision with SS "St Patrick" on 8 February 1918.
* The eighth "Boxer" was an LST that served during the Allied invasion of Italy in World War II. The vessel was later used as a fighter direction ship and after the war, a radar training vessel.
* The most recent "Boxer" was a Type 22 frigate, launched in 1981, paid off in 1999 and sunk as a target in August 2004.
