Visakhapatnam Airport Airport codes|VTZ|VEVZ is located convert|7|km|mi|abbr=on from Visakhapatnam in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is controlled by the Indian Navy which carries out air traffic control as well as provides support for flying operations for both military and civil aviation.

The runway was originally convert|6000|ft|m|abbr=on and Indian Union Minister of State for Mines T Subbirami Reddy inaugurated the newly constructed convert|10500|ft|m|abbr=on and convert|60|m|ft|abbr=on wide runway at the Vizag Airport on June 15, 2007.

With the installation and calibration of the instrument landing system, Visakhapatnam got night landing capabilities in July 2007, with the Dornier of the Indian Navy taking off from the new landing facility.

The night landing facility became operational from 30 March, 2008 for commercial airlines with SpiceJet being the first airline to use the facility. International airport status has been planned by the end of 2008 and airlines, including SilkAir and Air-India Express, have expressed their interest in flying out of Visakhapatnam.

Future Plans

A memorandum of understanding between the Airports Authority of India and Satyabhama University has been signed to bring Falcon Airlines of England to start a Flying Club and Aeronautical Institute.
