Michael James Coulson (born 4 April 1988) is an English footballer who plays for Conference National side Grimsby Town as a striker. He has previously played for Scarborough, Barnsley, Northwich Victoria and Chester City.

Career

Scarborough

Born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Coulson made 42 appearances and scored nine goals for Scarborough after making his first team debut against Accrington Stanley. He scored his first Scarborough goal in the home game against Tamworth.

Barnsley

In 2006, he was signed by Barnsley. Coulson scored his first Barnsley goal in the FA Cup against Southend United in January 2007. He joined Northwich Victoria on loan in August 2007.^[3] He was called back into the Barnsley squad in January 2008 amid concerns about the current strikers lack of goal-scoring. He scored his second goal for Barnsley in the FA Cup against Blackpool, in the same round of the cup as he had scored his first goal the previous year.

He suffered a very bad injury in training on 21 April, damaging his cruciate knee ligament. The injury is a huge blow to him, with boss Simon Davey claiming it to be a "disaster". "He's been coming on and doing well for us. He's the first name I look to put on the bench" he told the club website. He now faces a lengthy period of recovery, and is unlikely to play again this year.

On 14 October 2009 Coulson signed a month loan deal with Chester City. He made his debut on 17 October against Gateshead. He scored his first goal for Chester on 7 November in a 3–1 win over Grays Athetic. He returned to Barnsley making five appearances and scoring one goal, but these would later be removed from the records after Chester were expelled from the Conference National the following February.

Grimsby Town

On 19 November 2009 Coulson signed for League Two side Grimsby Town on an initial-month loan spell.^[4] Coulson scored his first goal for The Mariners on the 5 December 2009 in the 1–1 draw with Dagenham & Redbridge. Coulson was released by Barnsley at the end of the 2009–10 season, leaving him free to join up with Grimsby on a permanent basis, signing a two-year contract.

International career

On 2 September 2010 Coulson was called into the England C squad for a match against Wales but injury prevented him from making his debut.^[5]
