Mission Statement

Sir Matthew Begbie Elementary School supports and sustains the members of our community of learners to achieve their academic potentials, in a safe, caring and socially responsible environment.

History

Named after BCs first court judge, it was built in East Hastings on a piece of land named "Block Seventy". Block Seventy was moved a couple of metres south to make room for a building with 8 rooms named Sir Matthew Begbie. In March of 1948, construction of a 21 room building began on the current site. 15 years and 800 students later in 1963, 4 portables were added and then later removed. In July of 1987 the school underwent massive updating of the interior and exterior which cost $2 million. Now the pleasant school has an enrollment of about 350 students, with many cultural backgrounds.
