Crew (comic)

Crew, the first regular Czech international comic magazine, started publication in 1997. It was meant to be published every two months, but it started having long breaks after the first year. Officially publication ended in 2003 with Crew 21.

It ran for quite some time under the team of Štěpan Kopřiva, Jiří Pavlovský and Petr Litoš. But issues 17–21 were done by Vladimír Veverka. After the collapse of the original magazine, Litoš, Kopřiva and Pavlovský began to publish a new magazine — Crew2. Nineteen issues have been published to date (first issue published 2003, latest 2007).

Name

Not to be confused with the English word "crew," the name of the magazine was a pun on the word blood (Czech: krev) as the magazine wished to portray "bloody" comics alongside others.

Legend

In the Czech and Slovakian republic, it is long held for a legend (being Czech, the Slovakians have no such magazine of their own), being the only magazine to officially publish international comics after the 90's comics wave within the Czech republic. It has been criticized for not publishing Czech comics, which was redeemed partly by local magazines, such as Pot.

Explaining the end of the original magazine: Crew 22 was meant to be an issue of the original Crew comics magazine, yet it never was published and Veverka sold the Logo back to the original team. Also, all the comics (except for Understanding Comics's second part) were published in the new magazine.

The Crew under Veverka was visibly less popular with the long-time fans, although it had its own following.

The new Crew magazine has claimed the legacy of the old one and there are some who claim that the new magazine also reproduces the long pauses between issues (to summarize:in 2005 5 issues were produced, instead of the regular five and the Christmas issue of 2005 appeared as the first issue of 2006, leaving the dates of two more magazine publishings unfulfilled. But the crew of the magazine must be credited, because instead they have published other comic books, such as:

Crew 12

Crew 12 was the twelfth issue of Crew (comic) magazine, published in 1999.

The editorial,whose name is a pun on an old Czech saying,witch roughly translates to:so long we go to the water with a mug,until the handle breaks off,is centered around the publication of Sin City by the Crew publishing company,witch it formerly hesitated to do,stating that its members fear that the book would never sell good enough on the small Czech market to cover for its publication expenses.It also promises the publication of manga,Adam Warrens Dirty Pair .

Crew 13

Crew #13 was the thirteenth issue of Crew (comic) magazine, published in 1999.

This issue features many examples of the editorial crew's tongue-in-cheek black humour:in its editorial, an apology for the delayment of the publication of Batman/Darkness due to Marc Silvestris "lazyness",and a statement that Todd McFarlane spends most of his time in his garage, playing with action figures and talking for them in changed voices .

Another example of such humour in this issue is the biography of Alan Grant, where a weak attempt to begin the article leads to the description of a satanist ritual, involving middle-aged woman's fetuses and the third teeth of Winston Churchill ((Churchill)1874-1965, denture 1951-1967) being used to conquer the Earth.
