Sanctions (Axis of Time)

Sanctions (Axis of Time)

In John Birmingham's Axis of Time series of novels, "Sanctions" are a system of Field Punishments applied to enemy combatants. First adopted by the Australian Defence Force in 2008, it was adopted in the United States by Executive Order of President Hillary Clinton, also in 2008, and enacted into law by the United States Congress in 2009.

The system was standardised across the world in the Wellington Agreement of 2012, as signed by the 'Echelon' western countries

Official sanctions

anction One

Indefinite incarceration in extra-judicial prison

anction Two

Physical punishment.

anction Three

Relevant punishment up to summary execution and disposal of remains in culturally relevant manner.

Sanction Four

Summary Execution after hostile debrief, followed by disposal of remains in culturally relevant manner.

Unofficial sanctions

anction Five

Enemy combatants destroyed in such a way that they cannot be martyred for the cause. Where possible the individual is 'disappeared' before a bomb destroys their house, leaving behind a small amount of DNA. The combatant is then subjected to months of hostile debrief before being exposed to their defamation in the outside world. Followed by execution and disposal of remains in a culturally irreverent manner. Examples are for Muslims to be sewn up in a pigskin and buried in the jungle somewhere. Similar to Room 101 in "1984".

anction Eight

Unofficial transfer of detainee to custody of another nation, one not subject to the Wellington Agreement

anction Nine

Assassination.
