Naming the School

With the 54-acre (220,000 m2) site for the school being located only a couple miles from the Olympic Training Center, naming the school Olympic High School seemed a logical choice; but the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) denied the request to use the name "Olympic." Following further negotiations with the USOC, Sweetwater Union High School District was authorized to use the name Olympic Vista High School.[1] The USOC did eventually approve the use Olympian High School as the name of the school resulting in a quick name change.

Alma Mater

Olympian, oh hail to thee
Your noble heights we claim.
The excellence you do instill
Will bring us growing fame.
Your mountain shadows brave the morn,
We view Pacific shores.
In years to come,
We'll talk with pride
Of how the Eagle soars.

Mission statement

The mission statement of Olympian High School is that "Every graduate of Olympian High School will qualify and be academically ready for success in a four year college or university." In order to achieve this goal, the school is planning over the years to add as many Advanced Placement classes as possible and also to have the students practice the philosophy of The Habits of Mind. Three which are stressed regularly are Metacognition, Intellectual Perseverance, and Intellectual Curiosity. Another method in which Olympian High School prepares its students for college or university leveled studies is by teaching common skills that are used daily in university curriculum, known as "The College Readiness Skills". Prior to the official opening of the school, Olympian High School did a study on college and university students and collected six commonly used skills that many of them used:

-Analysis
-Synthesis
-Knowledge
-Application
-Comprehension
-Evaluation
(mnemonic: ASK ACE)

Each skill is taught and practiced every six weeks. Teachers often make assignments to help encourage OHS students to practice each skill; which, at the end of the six week period, the students are required to compose a written response and a short evaluation of how the skill being taught has affected their learning in a [positive] way. In essence, the students explain what skill they used and explained how the skill was utilized within their class. It's been noted that the Principal of Olympian (formerly John DeVore, currently Elaine Leano) reads the students' written responses.
