Mark Nielsen

Mark Nielsen (born August 25, 1964) was a Connecticut state senator during the 1990s and later served as legal counsel and chief of staff to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Nielsen currently is Associate General Counsel at Praxair, a large industrial gases company headquartered in Danbury, Connecticut.

In 1992, Nielsen, a Republican, was elected to a seat in the Connecticut House of Representatives from Danbury. In 1994, he was elected to the Connecticut Senate. He was among the most vocal fiscal conservatives in the Connecticut legislature and filed a lawsuit to enforce the state's constitutional spending cap. Nielsen waged narrowly unsuccessful runs for Congress in 1998 and 2000.

Nielsen is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. In 2007, it was reported that Nielsen was under consideration by the Bush Administration for the vacant U.S. Attorney post in Boston, but he declined the position. [1] In 2009, Nielsen was named In-House Counsel of the Year by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
