Hervé (Norman)

Hervé (Norman)

Hervé was a Norman mercenary general in Byzantine service during the 1050s. About 1050, he first appears as the leader of the Norman mercenaries under Nicephorus Bryennius the Elder and one of the Greek's two chief lieutenants.

In 1057, Hervé rebelled against the Emperor Michael VI and led his 300 Normans soldiers into eastern Asia Minor to set up a state for himself. He entered into wars with Armenia and the Seljuk Turks. He was eventually captured in a war with the emir of Ahlat, Abu Nasr. He was shipped back to Constantinople in chains, but there he was reconciled to the emperor and given the title of "stratilate" in the army of Isaac Comnenus.
