"SBU TV", standing for Stony Brook University Television, is a student-run, student-operated closed-circuit television station at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

History

Founded in 2001, SBUTV "http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/clubs/sbutv" was created as a means for Stony Brook University Students to inform the Stony Brook University community of the current issues. It was also created to by provide entertainment programming, and to give students the opportunity for hands-on access to professional television equipment. Students who have worked at "SBU TV" have gone on to be employed by various television stations including MTV, Lime (TV), News 12 and Fox 5. The station is funded by Stony Brook University's Undergraduate Student Government. The website is http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/clubs/sbutv/

3TV, the precursor to SBU TV, was formed as a student club in the mid-90s as a way for students to get hands on involvement in television and television production, started by Stony Brook University's student government, the Student Polity Association. 3TV was ultimately shut down in the late 90s, possibly as a result of the airing of copyrighted material. After lengthy negotiations, it was reborn as SBU TV in April 2001 under new rules and with a part-time paid adviser. With help from from University faculty and staff advisers, students began producing their own programming for broadcast over the campus cable system that Fall. The station has continued to grow, with new and original programming. With the creation of a Journalism Department and curriculum in 2006, the influx of new staff will lead to more productions.
